This is a special round-trip price negotiated between Slovakian, Austrian and German railway, valid every day without seat limitation and without obligation to purchase via Internet. The ticket can be used by anyone, but it has to be bought in Slovakia. This is very beneficial for citizens of Vienna because of Bratislava proximity and because the route is via Vienna.

The deal is described at the end of the Slovak Railways page. Any IC, EC and EN train may be used and there is no limit how many times you change the trains. For ICE there is a surcharge. There is very little reason to use ICE, most trains are IC, EC or EN.

It's a railpass-like round-trip ticket called "CITY-STAR" through all Hungary, Austria and Germany and back. The price is the same regardless of the route.

Explanation: the first person is paying 175 Euro, the second, third, fourth, fifth person is paying 87.50 Euro and children (6-14) are either free (with parent/grandparent) or paying 43.75 Euro regardless of the distance. The tickets are valid 1 month, unlimited stopovers. EC/IC surcharge is included, for 197 Euro (98.50 for passenger #2-5) instead of 175/87.50 also all ICE surcharges regardless how many ICE trains will be used. The ticket has to be used within 7 days of purchase and the passenger has to spend at least one weekend at the destination. The route "there" and "back" may differ, border-crossing stations should be same.

Sample: a couple with a 10 year and a 13 year old child would pay total of 197 + 98.50 = 297.5 Euro for

Budapest->Vienna->Klagenfurth->Innsbruck->Lindau->Munich->Berlin->Cologne->Venlo(Border) "there"
and
Venlo(Border)->Cologne->Trier->Koblenz->Stuttgart->Lindau->Salzburg->Linz->Vienna->Budapest ticket,
with all surcharges for ICE, IC, EC included.

That is: 37.19 Euro pro person pro direction. Having that ticket, the travelers can change trains as many times they want and visit all cities on route they want. This is why I consider this kind of ticket one of the best deals in entire West Europe.

This kind of ticket with both Austria and Germany can be bought in Hungary (+ Slovenia+Croatia+Serbia+Republika Srpska+Bulgaria+Romania+Slovakia) only. Unlike Eurail or Interrail, there is no citizenship/residence limitation, everyone can use them.

I have just booked the newly opened A&O Hotel/Hostel in Dresden for Easter 2008. The Hostel and Hotel are in the same building. There seem to be no differences when booking a Hostel or a Hotel room. This refers at least to twin rooms. Dormitories are of course only available for the Hostel.

A good VT friend advised me to check their rates not only on their own webpage but also on the official website of the Dresden Tourist Information (www.dresden.de).

I realised that exactly the same room category was an incrdible 30 % cheaper when booked through www.dresden.de. So if you are interested in booking the A&O Hotel or Hostel please make sure that you check tehir rates on www.dresden.de.
