MTA is offering a discounted fare for travel within and between the Boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx on Metro North Railway and Long Island Railway. You can now travel on MNR and LIRR within New York City on weekends for $3.50 with a "CityTicket." Purchase your ticket at a New York City train station on the day of travel (either at a ticket window or a touch-screen machine). The deal allows you to get to stations such as Jamaica (adjacent to the JFK Airport AirTrain), Flushing, Riverdale, Rosedale, and Bronx Botanical Garden. Restrictions apply, so check the website for details.

B & Bs in central Texas are offering veterans returning Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and their spouses a complimentary one- or two-night stay at participating B & Bs, guest cottages, and hotels. Each location has its own distinct characteristics so each couple can choose a place which best suits their needs. Each proprietor determines when they offer rooms as part of this project.

Chicago Office of Tourism offers free 2 - 3 hour personalized tours for groups of 6 or less via public transportation. They provide a 1-day public transit pass and volunteer guide. Some guides are multi-lingual. Tours generally cover a neighborhood or, upon request and availability of volunteer staff, will focus on an area of interest like trendy shopping areas.

All tour guides are volunteers. They are not professionals and they are unscripted. They are chosen for their enthusiasm for Chicago; some will be better than others. All locations must be within Chicago city limits.

Tours must be booked 1 week in advance and confirmed 1 day in advance. Not available for residents of Chicago. Most tours leave from the Chicago Visitor Center in downtown Chicago. Tipping is not permitted but donations are accepted at the Chicago Visitor Center.

If you are traveling across southern Pennsylvania and do not insist on luxury accomodations, try the Econo Lodge at Exit 232 off of I-80. If you stay there, they give you a Discount Card good for a 10% discount off the prices at nearby restaurants and retail outlets. When I recently visited, there were discounts at Windsor Heights Golf Course & Restaurant, Perkins Family Restaurant & Bakery, GNC (General Nutrition Center), Payless Shoe Source, Country Accents, Auntie Anne's Soft Pretzels, and Radio Shack. (Computers and cell phones were excluded from the discounts at Radio Shack.)
